Coal Drops Yard Opens Today

Coal Drops Yard, a new retail development in King's Cross opens today. GQA have been acting as heritage consultants for the transformation of these listed railway buildings by Heatherwick Studio. Originally built by the Great Norther Railway as part of their goods yards in the 1850s and used as Bagley's nightclub in the 1990s. We have worked closely with the design team to develop the bold, innovative design, whilst advising on conservation to the Victorian structures. Major challenges included how to provide level access to the listed building, how to upgrade the fabric to BREEAM Very Good standard and how to retain quirky historic features.

Coal Drops Yard will feature retail units, ranging from international brands, to new start-ups and traditional manufacturers. Heatherwick Studio have designed a spectacular new roof-level extension with curving slate roofs. It is in the heart of King's Cross, an emerging neighbourhood that includes some of the most historic railway buildings in the country and new buildings by some of the biggest names in architecture today.
